B2 / B52 Mode A

Postby satcom » June 12th, 2014, 11:53 am

As many will know there are presently a gaggle of B2s and B52s based at Fairford carrying out daily sorties

These a/c are Mode A/C only.
However if you are using an SBS3 or Puck then you can attempt to locate and track them using PlanePlotter's SSR based Beamfinder Plus function.

The B52s , provided in range of your antenna are pretty easy to locate , the B2s a little more illusive , but nevertheless have been pinned down on a number of occassions during their round-UK trips.

I understand that the B2s are here until the weekend...the B52s , for another week or so .

B2's tracking nicely John and pretty accurate too, as long as the correct squawk code is shown on PP. Swapped my own radar file for the one you posted and working well.

After a few days beamfinding the B2s based at Fairford it seems the only
time a good lock is achieved is when the a/c is in the turn.

The SSR code appears steady in the list but BF plus struggles to lock it
until the a/c banks....once out of the turn the beams fade away

Here it is in a left turn for Fairford after passing over Anglesey

I am using this Mode A filter list

which completely de-clutters the xxnnnn list

Without filter I have about 60 entries , with the filter just a handful ,
and those are invariably active

Regards

John

I didn't need to look at Base Station to find one about a week ago as it was circling over Stornoway, gaining height before heading off in a SW direction over the Atlantic.
All BS showed was a Mis-Code so I've no idea which one it was but definitely a B52.
Not seen one in years so I was quite happy.
