I haven't used a (plain) postcard for years now (nor a sealed envelope masquerading as a postcard)! Can you still buy them? :)

Cool!! :D

Just out of interest Chris, is there a 'Top 3' or 'Top 5' suggestions that became apparent with the entries.

Cheers,
Andrew.

Oddly enough

Postby KineticChris » December 8th, 2009, 9:26 pm

Oddly enough it was a post I was just compiling.

When you ask what folk want unprompted you get a different list of requests.

Most requested 5 is as follows

Grab and move Map

Exel file of Reporter

Picture Database

Audio Via Ethernet or USB for the SBS-1ER

Replacement for Flight display

This all surprised me a bit as there was not any requests for google earth or fancy mapping so either folk are happy with what they have or PP fills the gap

We will have a poll as soon as I put the list together and get to the nitty gritty

What surprises me even more is the lack of what I consider system technical improvement in the top requests examples such as...

Getting the ground position decode algorithm changed so that plotting of ground targets is not dependant on Home location set.

Adding a QNH offset facility.

Investigation of the receive decode to see if it is possible to suppress sub 1 second spurious reception where end time is before start time.

Investigation of Basestation methodology of loading and using outlines, waypoints and bitmaps to look for improvements so that CPU load is minimised when running Basestation.

I'm sure there are plenty of others that can be found in the various wish-lists that have been around for a while.

All I'm asking is please do not forget to fix the fundamentals underpinning Basestation and the SBS-1 firmware. 8)

Yes, I agree.

The wording of the question "I wish my SBS could .......................................................... " was inevitably going to elicit suggestions for things that the SBS doesn't currently do, as opposed to things that it does do, albeit not well or properly, such as the ground decoding bug or the outline/waypoint handling.

What worries me is that Kinetic might develop a new version of Basestation using just a postcard specification.

I have a list of improvements and new features that was prepared at Kinetic's request nearly two years ago. There is even a poll on Radarspotters of some of the 100+ items on the list.

But only 109 have voted (maybe more sent in postcards?) so it is hardly representative of the 10,000 plus (claimed) SBS-1 customers.

The virtual radar market is now 4 years old and the "hobby" has evolved with numerous add-ons and complementary solutions. If we were to close our eyes and think really hard, I'm sure we could come up with new improvements and features that aren't on my list.

A new ModeS receiver and software is due next month and only today AirNav has announced the release of its latest version of RadarBox.

Perhaps we SBS-1 customers will also enjoy a new version of Basestation, who knows? But hopefully it will have had the benefit of quality thinking and consultation and not just a few votes and postcards?

The real solution

Postby KineticChris » December 10th, 2009, 10:34 am

I guess the real solution is to get every SBS owner to fill in a questionaire.

109 people in a poll hardly represensent the SBS community.
I am not saying that we do not value the input but we have to take on board the thoughts of the other thousands of users.

Perhaps with the next firmware or software update there will be some questions to answer before you can download it.

The competition was only for fun and the 8th most popular answer was make the Tea but I doubt Kinetic will be getting together with PG in the forseeable future

Chris Taylor
